When a child’s bedroom has to accommodate playtime, homework and two sleeping children, floor space quickly becomes at a premium. A bunk bed solves this classic space problem by making the most of the room’s height. But before you invest in a piece of furniture for everyday use, there are several practical details to consider. You need to be aware of safety requirements, weight limits and the correct dimensions to make the best choice. At Lifetime Kidsrooms, we design and manufacture children’s furniture with a focus on quality craftsmanship, combining smart solutions with space for adventure.

Sizes and dimensions: From junior to bunk beds

Many parents fixate on standard sizes, but beds come in a range of sizes to suit different ages and rooms. The standard size for a bunk bed is 90x200 cm, which provides plenty of space for both children and teenagers.

A popular solution for shared bedrooms or holiday homes is a family bunk bed. It features a wider lower bunk, typically measuring 120x200 cm or 140x200 cm. This provides space for two children on the bottom, or an adult can lie down comfortably whilst listening to a bedtime story. Find inspiration in our selection of family bunk beds. If you later need to divide the children between two rooms, our modular systems can easily be converted into two single beds.

For very young children, the transition from a cot can seem quite a big change. Here, you can start with our Montessori floorbeds, which is based on the Montessori principles of independence, meaning that the base can later be used to raise the bed.

Rules regarding ladders, mattresses and age

Peace of mind at night requires more than just a sturdy frame. Safety experts recommend that a child should be at least six years old to sleep in the top bunk. This is directly linked to the child’s motor development and ability to navigate the ladder in the dark.

The ladder itself must be designed to prevent accidents. The distance between the rungs must not exceed 8 cm, so that small feet cannot slip through. We design our beds with non-slip rungs, and you can see examples of safe ladders by looking at our highbeds with staircase. They provide extra peace of mind and incorporate storage into the steps.

The thickness of the mattress also affects safety. The bed rail must be a certain height above the mattress to prevent falls. Typically, a mattress no thicker than 15 cm is recommended for the top bunk. This ensures that the bed rail provides optimum protection, whether you choose a classic two-tier model or a mid-high bed.

Space requirements and ceiling height in a child’s bedroom

Many manufacturers only state the bed’s total height, but they fail to provide guidance on the necessary headroom above the bed. Without the right distance to the ceiling, the top bunk quickly becomes impractical.

The child in the top bunk must be able to sit upright without bumping their head. There should be at least 60 to 70 cm from the surface of the mattress to the ceiling. If the child’s bedroom has a standard ceiling height of 240 cm, most models will fit. If you have sloping walls or a lower ceiling, you’ll need to measure carefully. Position the bed against the wall where the ceiling is highest.

The distance between the lower and upper bunks also affects comfort at the bottom. A standard distance of around 78 cm allows a child to sit up comfortably. With taller models, the distance can be up to 105 cm, making it easier for adults to sit on the edge of the bed whilst tucking the child in.

Materials, certifications and sustainability

Children’s furniture needs to be able to withstand rough play and daily wear and tear for many years. Solid wood is a durable material for this purpose, but there is a wide variety of products available on the market.

At Lifetime Kidsrooms, we manufacture our furniture at our own factory in Latvia. We use FSC-certified pine for the frames to ensure the timber comes from sustainably managed forests. The surface treatment also affects the indoor air quality. Children spend many hours in bed and should not be breathing in harmful fumes. We use eco-friendly varnish free from harmful chemicals. Always look out for recognised labels such as the Nordic Swan Ecolabel for furniture or OEKO-TEX 100 for textiles, as these guarantee strict health and environmental standards.

Weight limits and use in holiday homes

When a bed is to be used in a holiday home, it is often adults who end up sleeping in it. That’s why you need to know the bed’s exact weight capacity before buying. Cheaper standard models often have a low weight limit of 75 to 80 kg per bunk.

Choose a model with a higher weight capacity for adults or larger teenagers. Our beds are built with sturdy slatted bases and robust wooden frames that can support up to 150 kg per sleeping space. This makes them ideal for the holiday home. A sturdy construction prevents annoying creaking noises and ensures a stable night’s sleep for guests.

Price expectations: How much does a good bed cost?

The price varies significantly depending on materials, design and country of manufacture. Simple metal frames or chipboard models found in large department stores are the cheapest on the market. For example, a budget-friendly model from a major furniture retailer costs around 999 kroner, whilst their popular pine bed costs between 2,000 and 2,300 kroner. They serve as a good temporary solution, but often lack the long-term stability of solid wood.

A solid wood bed with environmental certifications and Danish production typically costs between 2,500 and 8,000 kroner. Premium models, such as ours My Hangout beds, It costs more to buy. On the other hand, you get a modular system. The bed can be reconfigured and adapted as and when required, so that a high bed can later be converted into two single beds. This flexibility makes the investment financially sensible in the long run.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How old do you have to be to sleep in the top bunk?

Children should be at least six years old before sleeping in the top bunk. It requires a certain level of motor skills to climb the ladder safely at night. How much space should there be between the bed and the ceiling?

There should be at least 60 to 70 cm of headroom from the surface of the mattress to the ceiling. This ensures that the child can sit upright without bumping their head. Always measure the ceiling height of the room before choosing a model.

Can adults sleep in the beds?

Yes, adults can certainly sleep in the beds, provided the weight limit is observed. Our sturdy wooden beds have a weight capacity of up to 150 kg per bunk. This makes them particularly well-suited for adult guests staying in the holiday home.
