A shared room is not a compromise. For many families it is where the best stories are told after lights-out, where secrets are kept and where siblings become friends for life.

But a shared room does come with one big question: which bed?

It is also one of the most important investments you will make in your home. The bed takes up the most space, is used every single night and – if you choose well – can follow your children for many years. Here is how to think about it.

1. Start with the room, not the bed

Before you look at models, check three things:

  • Ceiling height. For a bunk bed we recommend at least half a metre between the top mattress and the ceiling, so little heads stay safe.
  • Floor space. A bunk bed takes up no more room than a regular bed – which leaves floor space for play, reading corners and desks.
  • Ages. A 3-year-old and a 9-year-old have different needs. Think about who sleeps up and who sleeps down, and how that may change.

2. The classic: a bunk bed

A bunk bed is the simplest way to give two children their own bed in one footprint. Choose a straight ladder for a compact solution, or add a staircase if you want extra storage and a safer way up and down.

3. The flexible one: a family bunk bed

In a family bunk bed the lower bunk is wider than the upper (for example 90/120 or 90/140 cm). That gives room for bedtime reading with a parent – and for the occasional sleepover or guest.

And when the children no longer want to share a bed frame, the beds can be separated into two individual beds.

4. The one that grows: rebuild what you already have

Already have a high sleeper or mid sleeper? With the LIFETIME bed system you can rebuild a high bed into a bunk bed when a sibling joins the room – and back again when the time comes. Some bunk beds can also be converted into two single beds by adding legs.

That is what we mean by an investment in your home: you are not buying a new bed every time life changes. You are adjusting the one you have.

See how the system works in Build your new bed with LIFETIME or try the bed configurator.

5. Don't forget safety and quality

In a shared room, safety matters twice. All LIFETIME beds are tested and approved by TÜV SÜD and meet EU requirements for children's beds. Add safety extras such as bed rails or a staircase with a gate where it makes sense – read more in Create safety with LIFETIME bed rails.
