The first night in a "big" bed is a milestone. It's also the night many parents lie awake listening for every sound from the next room.

A bed rail is one of the simplest ways to make that transition calmer – for your child and for you. Here's how bed rails work, when they make the most sense, and how to choose the right one for your Lifetime bed.

Why a bed rail makes sense

Children move a lot in their sleep. They roll, stretch, and sometimes fall asleep halfway out of the covers. A bed rail is mounted on the edge of the bed to help keep your child from falling out during the night – and from tumbling out when playing in the bed during the day.

It matters most in three situations:

  • The move from cot or toddler bed to a junior bed. The jump from a cot with high sides to an open bed edge is big. A bed rail makes the change more gradual.
  • Restless sleepers. Some children simply move more than others, and a little extra height on the bed side gives extra security.
  • Higher beds. In mid-high and high beds, the safety height matters even more, which is why safety is built into the design.

Three ways to add safety to a Lifetime bed

Lifetime's bed rails are designed to fit our beds, so you can add safety without compromising on design.

1. Bed rail with bars – light and airy

If you want safety without a heavy look, the bed rail with white metal bars is a good choice. Made from solid pine and durable metal bars, it gives the bed an open, Scandinavian look. It's also practical in shared rooms and holiday homes, where flexibility is key. A shorter version, the small bed rail with bars, works on basic children's beds and cabin beds.

2. Extra height with a safety guard

The extra safety guard raises the bed sides by an additional 16 cm. It's especially useful for toddlers moving up from a floor bed or toddler bed – and for homes with restless sleepers. The versions with a front or side opening make it easy for you to get in and out of the bed, for bedtime stories, cuddles and night-time visits.

3. Safety built into the bed itself

A bed rail works best together with a bed that's safe from the start. All LIFETIME beds have softly rounded corners to help minimise bumps. Our beds are made from FSC-certified pine, finished with water-based lacquers, and our beds and rails are TÜV-certified. You can read more in our guide Safety first: what to look for in a child's bed.

A bed rail that grows with your child

One of the things we like most about bed rails is that they're not forever – and that's the point. When your child is ready, the rail can be removed. If needs change again, for example with a new bed setup or a younger sibling, it can be added again.

That's how we think about all our furniture: don't buy new – adapt what you have. A safe bed shouldn't be replaced every time your child grows. It should change with them.

Tips for using a bed rail

  • Follow the assembly instructions carefully and check that the rail is firmly attached.
  • Re-check the fastening from time to time.
  • A bed rail adds safety, but doesn't replace adult supervision – especially with the youngest children.
  • Think about the whole bed: if you're choosing a high bed, our staircase with handrail and gate is another way to create safety – read how the staircase creates safety.
